Couple moved in together and started having too many conflicts about cleaning the dishes, leading them to actually consider breaking up: ‘Am I actually asking for too much and being unreasonable, or this as absurd as it feels to me?’

  • Am I insane for how upset I am over dishes, or is this actually a pattern? (27F, 30M, together 2.5 years, living together 2 months)

My boyfriend and I have been together 2 years, moved in together 2 months ago. We're pretty close to getting engaged. Last week we had a huge fight that's honestly still not fully resolved.
  • What started the fight: I cooked lunch, tidied up the apartment, and even got him a new charger for his laptop since his broke. We have an agreement that whoever cooks doesn't do
  • the dishes. He was doing them but complaining the whole time about how we should just get a maid. He didn't finish, left the pots and pans, and when I noticed he thought I was gonna do the rest I
  • laughed and jokingly said well pay me what you'd pay a maid then, since I'm doing everything anyway. He took that really badly, got mad, and the fight escalated until he walked out of the apartment
  • without saying anything. It turned into me having to list everything I do around. the apartment because he genuinely didn't seem to register it until I said it out loud: cooking most days,
  • tidying, making the bed, putting away dishes because he never puts them away once they're dry. For context, dishwashers aren't that common where we live (I'm used to having one)
  • and when we first moved in he was actually the one who said we didn't need one and that dishes should just be washed right away anyway. He told me not to do any
  • of those things anymore if I was going to throw it in his face like that, and that he'd rather I not cook on days he doesn't feel like doing dishes. This past Saturday was his

  • birthday party, but the morning of we also fought because I asked him why he didn't wait 1 minute for me at the gym before going straight inside (we run outside before). He got annoyed and said
  • something in our language basically like it was a hassle to even be asked. Later that night, dr_nk after his party, I was really overwhelmed and crying and just wanted to be with
  • my dogs, so at 2am I drove to my parents' house to cuddle with them and calm down. I know that wasn't the smartest decision. I wasn't trying to punish him or "leave," I just needed comfort and
  • planned on coming back, which I did by morning. But we'd had an agreement since moving in that no matter how bad a fight got we'd always sleep in the same place, and he treated me leaving as breaking
  • something "sacred," said it basically meant the relationship might be over, and asked if that was something I wanted to make room for going forward so we could break up now if it is.
  • Monday was his actual birthday and he brought it up again, sort of apologized, and said he'd notice things more and do better without me having to point it out every time, since that's the actual
  • thing that's exhausting me, being the one who always has to notice and ask. That lasted about 3 days. Dishes piled up again. He didn't put away dishes that had been dry all day (that I washed) Last night I
  • noticed he only washed his own cup and left two other dishes sitting right next to it in the sink. I was quiet because I was tired and had a headache from work, and also annoyed, and he got upset that I didn't say goodnight and
  • told me I have a attitude. This morning I brought it up again and he told me "this is the best I'm doing" and that if I'm going to be ped off about it I should find someone else who will
  • do better. I asked if he was telling me to leave him and he said yes, because he doesn't want to live with someone who's pl ed off all the time. I asked if he was really saying he'd rather I leave than do a couple extra dishes and be
  • a little more considerate. He said he was tired last night and didn't want to add to the pile so he'd finish them this morning. For context, he was tired because he played Fortnite with friends from 9 to 11pm that night, not
  • from anything he actually had to do. I should also mention that when I went on a week long trip with my family recently, he didn't buy groceries or drinking water for himself the entire time I
  • was gone. The dishes I had left drying were still there. We're Latino if that's relevant to the dynamic at all.
  • Am I actually asking for too much and being unreasonable, or is this as absurd as it feels to me? Any advice is greatly appreciated
  • How much can they dry?

  • Personal_Tip_8807 You're not asking for too much. As a Latina woman myself we have to stand for ourselves. Tbh is time to rethink that relationship, is that how you want to live the rest of your life?
